Y de repente veo un señor que venía curadito, a plena luz del día. Antiguamente la avenida Santa María bajaba, tenía una pendiente, y yo, como conductor inexperto, trato de esquivarlo hacia la derecha, pero el señor me sigue la ruta. De primero a octavo básico habíamos sido compañeros de curso. Ezequiel Rivas, si me estás viendo, para que constate que esto es verdad.

“Me dice ‘cagaíta’. Me dice ‘alcoholemia, comisaría, tranquilo’. No me puse a llorar. Pensé inmediatamente en mi papá y en mi mamá. 20 años, hace 33 años atrás, de verdad éramos otros jóvenes, muy distintos a los de hoy día. Yo no venía bebido y el señor era un indigente, pero eso no aminora la causa.

“Me suben al furgón, me olvido de mi auto, el señor de la EMI se toma un taxi y se va a buscar abogados, me voy a la comisaría. Me sientan, me toman una declaración, me siento y me dicen ‘te tení que quedar, es viernes, te tení que quedar aquí toda la noche’. ¿Querí hacer un llamado telefónico? ‘Papá, mamá, estoy en la comisaria. Atropellé a un señor’. Llegan en la noche a verme, me pongo a llorar cuando veo a mis papás. Dicen ‘¿lo podemos llevar a la casa?’. Y dicen ‘lamentablemente, señor, su hijo, y lo vamos a tratar con cariño, pasa ahora y lo tenemos que llevar al juzgado a dar la declaración a la actuaria’. Y yo pensé que la actuaria era la persona que te pegaba con un látigo, una especie de tortura, me imaginé cualquier cosa.

“Me subieron al otro día. Llegó hasta verme Myriam Hernández con sus papás. Me llevaron en una especie…”

Jara: “La pasé en el calabozo. Había más gente. Pero me trataron súper bien. Llegué al juzgado, me suben, doy la declaración a la actuaria y afuera aparece un abogado y una abogada. Trataron de apelar, para que me sacaran de inmediato, y no me pudieron sacar. Entonces, yo empiezo a sudar y me dicen ‘Capitán Yáber’, y yo pregunto ‘¿qué es la Capitán Yáber?’. ‘Es una cárcel que está aquí, en Rondizzoni, creo, por ahí. Me suben al auto policial y llego a la cárcel.

“Cuando llego a la cárcel, me meten en una especie de sección especial, porque hay unos presos que están por delitos más graves, otros por delito económicos, y estamos aquellos que hemos tenido delitos de este tipo. Y me encierran ahí. Me tiran un plato de lentejas. Y me empezaron a llegar mensajes de los otros presos, porque yo ya había estado en el Festival de Viña… Me quedo en un rincón y estuve viernes, sábado y domingo. Y el lunes lograron soltarme. Salgo de la cárcel, mis papás me están esperando afuera”

Basauri: “Lucho, perdón, ¿viernes, sábado y domingo cuclillas en tu rincón y no te moviste de ahí?”

Jara: “Durmiendo entre comillas, porque las amenazas llegaban. Eran amenazas que tenían que ver, se supone, con cosas que pasaban. El día martes tenía que tomar un avión a Colombia a representar a Chile en un festival. Y llego el lunes a mi casa, me siento en la cama, mis papás tratando de contenerme, y yo…”

Jara: “Empiezo a hablar así (imita voz de difónico). Y digo ‘¿qué hago?’ y llamaron a mi profesor de canto. Llegó Ricardo Álvarez. Trató de que yo hiciera ‘na, na, ná’. Y tenía que ir al festival. ‘No vaya, mijito’. ‘¿Cómo no voy a ir? Primer festival fuera de Chile. Llego al aeropuerto y me encuentro con mi compañero de curso que me detuvo, que estaba esperando a su mamá que venía de Europa. Y me dice ‘Lucho Jara, weón, ¿dónde vai?’. ‘Voy a Colombia’. ‘¿Con esa voz, weón?’. ‘Espero que allá se me quite’. Y de repente me dice ‘¿te cuento? Murió el viejo”
